Medicaid Physicians Advisory Board Meeting NotesScott Elledge, MD, Governor, AlaSOHN
On Sept 26,2013, I attended the Medicaid Physicians Advisory Board meeting in Montgomery, which was poorly attended, and in fact the committee will now meet twice a year in hopes of improving attendance. Click here for highlights and lowlights.
Welcome from the PresidentWilliam R. Blythe, MD, FACS, President, AL-SOHN
Welcome to the Alabama Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AL-SOHN) website. Our society represents the nearly 150 practicing Otolaryngologists in the state of Alabama. Otolaryngologists specialize in the medical and surgical management of diseases and disorders of the Ear, Nose and Throat, and are commonly referred to as “ENT Doctors.” These diseases and disorders are some of the most common conditions for which patients seek medical care, so it is quite common that patients, adult and pediatric, may have consulted an Otolaryngologist at some point in their life.
Our members work to advance the art, science and ethical practice of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery through education, communication, research and lifelong learning.
- Each summer, AL-SOHN hosts its annual summer meeting. In 2012 and 2013 we held a combined regional meeting with the Mississippi Society of Otolaryngology, and this has increased our attendance and meeting participation. We have invited Louisiana and Tennessee societies to join us in 2014, and we anticipate that this will further enhance our meeting participation and quality.
- AL-SOHN has representation on the Alabama Medicaid Task force, and we continue to monitor and participate in these meetings and decisions toward Alabama Medicaid reform.
- Our society has an ongoing commitment to its relationship with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama. We meet and communicate with them regularly regarding Draft medical Policies; current medical policies and coverage; and certification/reimbursement issues for our membership.
- AL-SOHN is active within the medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA) and its Third Party Task force and Legislative Affairs Committee. We monitor state and national legislative issues and work to represent our membership’s interest in these areas. Our representatives meet annually with our State and National legislators in Montgomery and Washington, DC, in order to express the interests and opinions of our membership.
None of this is possible without the continued support and input of our membership. I encourage each of you to contact me directly if you have any questions about the activity of the Society or any issues that need to be addressed. If you would like to get more involved with the Society and our activities, please let me know this as well.
